International Women’s Day is day to celebrate the Women’s Rights Movement, which seems more relevant this year than ever before. Traditionally, women have been seen as homemakers, the stay-at-home parent while the man is the breadwinner. Although this is still the case in many households around the world, it is now a choice that women have. We can choose to work, to stay at home, to be a creator, a visionary, anything we can conceive we can achieve. As cliché as that sounds, it is the truth and we have so many women from our past and present to thank for these endless opportunities.
Recently we have seen an outpouring of support that women have for each other in the media. Although it took something truly heart wrenching for it to happen, what was brought to light is the endless love and support women have for each other. We have seen women standing UP for and standing BY each other. Too often we feel like our struggles are ours to go through alone, our accomplishes are ours to celebrate alone, our trials and tribulations, our random stories, our hopes, dreams and desires, are to keep to ourselves because “no one else will care” or “no one else is going through the same thing” or “I don’t want to make others feel bad about themselves”. Well if we have learned anything in these past few months, it’s that women are stronger together. They are stronger when they tell their stories. They are stronger when they stand up for one another.
We women are a tribe of unique individuals. We share so much in common yet we each come from a different place, a different time, a different story. Take a moment to tell a woman in your life how much you love and appreciate her, even if (especially if) you need to look in the mirror and realize that the woman you need to give unconditional love to is yourself.
