The Importance of Regular Facials for Teens

Having a facial regularly is important to help keep skin glowing and healthy. We can go through all the steps at home (i.e., cleanse, exfoliate, masque, etc.) to help keep our skin clear but sometimes we just need the helpful hands of an esthetician to properly prepare and soften the skin before manual extractions can take place safely and effectively. There are so many benefits of regular facials but for teens in particular, facials can help to clear out blackheads and clogged pores which are caused by excess oil production from hormones, as well as less than ideal food choices.

Education is key when it comes to proper skin care.

The level of intensity of facials is dependent on the severity of one’s skin conditions such as sensitivity, redness, acne, etc, therefore each facial is different for every individual. Not only are regular facials important to combat the natural hormonal changes in a teen’s body, but an esthetician can also educate the teens during their facial on ways to care for their skin properly. That way they can keep the results that they see throughout the time in between each facial.

Over time, the results from regular facials will get better and better leaving skin clearer, brighter, and more radiant, which in turn can increase levels of self-esteem and confidence.

Bonus: For the month of March, we are offering bonus eyebrow shaping with the Teen Facial. It has been said that next to teeth, eyebrows are the most important feature on one’s face. Having eyebrows that are shaped help to frame the face, emphasizing one’s natural beauty, especially their eyes. A well-groomed brow provides a polished look without needing a lot of make-up, which saves both time and money! Choose between waxing or threading to achieve a perfectly polished, radiant look.

How What You Eat Affects Your Skin: Foods to Eat and Foods to Avoid

It seems natural to think about how what we put ON our skin can help clear it up, reduce redness, and promote a healthy glow. What we often don’t consider, however, is what we put IN our bodies and how that can be sabotaging all of our efforts (and money) to get a glowing, blemish free, even skin tone.

Try these tips to help keep your complexion blemish-free:

Have MORE of:
1. Water

– Water helps flush out toxins and hydrates your skin. When it’s cold out, warm water with lemon or herbal tea will help you get all of your H2O in.

2. Foods containing zinc
Zinc helps to reduce inflammation and production of bacteria. Good sources of zinc include cashews, avocados, blackberries, raspberries, pumpkin seeds, spinach and squash.

3. Antioxidant-rich foods
– These foods help protect your skin against free radical damage from the sun and environmental pollution. Great sources of antioxidants include berries (blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), leafy greens (kale, spinach, collard greens), pomegranates, and bell peppers.

4. Essentail Fatty Acids (EFAs)
– EFAs help flush toxins and bacteria that clog pores, as well as decrease inflammation in your digestive system ultimately leading to better skin health (yes, the two are very closely linked!). Good sources of Essential Fatty Acids include salmon, chia seeds, almost, pumpkin seeds, and organic olive oil.

Have LESS of:
1. Cow’s Milk Dairy
– Cow’s milk dairy contains hormones that cause breakouts. Also, many of lack the proper enzyme to digest cow’s milk dairy, therefore it can cause inflammation in the gut, which can lead to a reaction on our skin.

2. Sugar
– Sugar causes insulin levels to spike, which can lead to inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation can cause a breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin which results in dull, saggy skin.

3. Salty Foods
– Salty foods such as chips, pretzels, and salted nuts all promote water retention in your body leaving you feeling bloated and looking puffy.

Try incorporating these tips into your current eating routine and see that changes that a few simple swaps can make.

Transitioning Your Skincare to Suit the Changing Weather

Well, we can officially wave goodbye to Summer as we embrace the chilly weather among us. If you’re anything like me, you’re noticing your skin changing too. Maybe it is a little more irritated than usual, maybe it is more red, maybe it is even starting to crack a little.
Our skin pH changes as the weather changes.
With the change in our skin’s pH means a change in the way our current products react to our skin. What may have worked in the gruelling heat of Summer is no longer applicable as the wind gusts across our faces. It also means that we may not be producing natural oils on our face any more which can leave our dry, irritated skin susceptible to environmental toxins, pollutants and bacteria.
Developing a new skincare routine.
The major component to our skincare routine that we need to add in the colder months is a heavier night cream. This will help our skin replenish moisture while we sleep and will ultimately help protect our skin to prevent irritation.
Morning Routine:
  1. Get clean: Switch from a harsher foaming cleanser to something a bit more nourishing like a milky or oil-based cleanser. Bonus: oil-based cleansers will provide a protectant layer over your skin.
  2. Tone it up: Gentle toners get rid of dirt and grime and prepare your face for moisturizer.
  3. Serum: Absolute game changer when it comes to moisture. Serums penetrate deeper layers of your skin, whereas moisturizers work on the first couple of layers. In combination, they nourish your skin and keep it feeling soft.
  4. Moisturize: Again, very important in terms of retaining moisture in your skin and combatting the harsher weather. Lets talk SPF for a moment. Just because the suns rays are no longer scalding our faces doesn’t mean we do away with our SPF. SPF should be worn 365 days a year to ensure protection again any sort of UV rays (the #1 cause of premature aging I might add!)

Our Skin PH changes as the Weather Changes

Night Routine:
  1. Get clean (again): Cleansing your face is very important at night as it is imperative we remove the dirt, grime, and make-up that has been on our face all day.
  2. Slough it off: Exfoliation is a key step as it helps clean deep in our pores. It also helps brush off dead skin cells which helps with skin turnover, resulting in a refreshed, glowy look.
  3. Toner: Applying toner at night helps rebalance the pH of your skin from all it has encountered during the day. Added bonus: it shrinks your pores so that less dirt can enter them.
  4. Moisturize: Choose a thicker, heavier cream to use at night. Our skin does the bulk of its repairing and regenerating while at rest and night creams focus on the moisture and recovery of our skin. They contain more potent ingredients that release into your skin over time as there is no risk of sunscreen or sun exposure interfering with the process.
So although not entirely different, adding some new key products into your fall/winter skincare routine is a must to prevent irritation, redness, and dry skin.

Want Radiant, Glowing Skin? What’s your Skincare Regime?

There are a number of skincare products available in the marketplace today but how many give you glowing skin.  Everyday it seems like a new line of products is being introduced that promises miraculous results and guarantees wonders.  But how many of these products are actually chemical free without compromising on performance ?

The polluted environment and lack of time for proper and results oriented skincare can result in lacklustre skin.  The reason most products are not helping your skin is because they are predominantly chemical based-infused with synthetic ingredients, artificial colours and fragrances to name just a few.

Our skin is sensitive and requires products that work from within and not just provide an outer covering.  Skincare is skin deep.  After all,  acquiring naturally beautiful looking skin is what we all desire.

At Pretty In Pink Spa we encourage and promote wholesome, plant based skin care – skin that is nourished from the inside and radiant on the outside!  We believe in only using and selling  products that are chemical free and non toxic, plant based providing ultimate nutrition for your skin.  One example of products that we carry that goes skin deep is Éminence – Handmade Organic Skincare from Hungary.Copy of MICRO GREENS COLLECTION TOUT

Our skin is exposed to harmful chemicals and pollutants all through the day, natural products have the power to deep cleanse and moisturize the skin – leaving it fresh and renewed without the exposure to toxic detrimental ingredients!  Éminence products are handmade and contain the required nutrients and supplements that facilitate glowing and radiant skin.  Their line of skincare products is compatible on all skin types and are gentle enough to be used every day.

Ladies, in order to age gracefully, our skin requires some TLC, attention and care.  Busy lifestyles and lack of time leads many of us ignoring the needs of our skin.  This ultimately results in lifeless and dull aging skin.  The elasticity, glow and radiance of our skin is lost and no amount of makeup can bring it back, Sorry Ladies.  This is where the need to use natural and chemical free products arises to regenerate the skin, resulting in supple and healthy skin.

Visit us in person and speak to any one of our knowledgable staff about the large selection of Éminence products that we carry.  Not sure what products would be good for your skin?  No problem we have you covered.  Book a 10 minute free skin assessment from our  experienced aesthetician and leave with samples for you to try.  We know once you try them you won’t be disappointed.  Your skin will thank you!

What Goes on Your Body Goes In Your Body?

There is nothing wrong with wanting to feel good with a touch of  makeup, perfumes, lipsticks, eye liners and foundations, but still you need to be careful of what t branded cosmetic companies are trying to smear on your face.

If you look into this industry thoroughly, it runs on “innocent until proven guilty” access to its ingredients. If the chemicals used in beauty products are proven not to cause harm to human health, they are classified as “generally recognized as safe”. We are focusing throughout this article how we can identify the toxic ingredients commonly found in cosmetics and skincare. To do that, first take a thorough read of the ingredient lists carefully on products that you are purchasing. This list will help you to avoid chemicals that are unhealthy and considered toxic.

      • Leadlips

Canada alone, has found over 650 cosmetic products contaminated with lead, including foundation, whitening toothpaste, nail polish, sunscreens and lipsticks to name a few. Studies indicate these toxins are linked in learning, cognitive abilities, behavioral and language problems as well as links with lethargy, anxiety, lowered fertility in men and women and interrupted puberty onset in girls.

  • Diethanolamine

DEA (diethanolamine) and its associated compounds are used to make cosmetics sudsy or creamy. It also can adjust the pH, canceling out the acidity of other ingredients, so that the cosmetic authority can show their creams are in the pH range that is suitable for your skin, at the same time causing an irreversible damage to your body. Pay close attention while choosing your moisturizers and sunscreens, and also remember that soaps, cleansers, and shampoos can contain other types of DEA called Cocamide and Lauramide DEA. DEA and its compounds can affect your skin and eye irritation both in mild and moderate amounts. The European Union has branded DEA as unhealthy on the basis of danger of severe damage to health from extended usage.

  • Butylated Substances

BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) and BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) are very jointly related synthetic antioxidants which are mainly used as preservatives in moisturizers and lipsticks. BHT and BHA can cause skin allergic reactions and what is worse about it is that it can cause human carcinogens or simply cancers and alter our body’s normal hormone functions, mostly the functions of estrogen and thus would result in adverse reproductive effects, according to the latest research by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

  • Coal Tar Dyes

These are extensively used coloring agent in cosmetics, generally determined by a 5 digit Color Index (C.I.) number. If you are living in North America the color name may be listed as, “FD&C” or “D&C” followed by a color name plus number. If you ever have seen these letters in your hair dye pack, it’s time to throw it away. Although several coal tar dyes are banned Canada, USA and other European countries, dozens of coal tar-derived colors are still broadly used in many other countries.

  • Parabens

These are used as the most prevalently used preservative as well as a fragrance ingredient in cosmetics. Normally fragrance recipes become trade secrets; that in the hand of consumers, this seems like a risk, but manufacturers turn it to their boon that they need not to include fragrance chemicals in the list of ingredients. Although it is at very low levels, 75 to 90 per cent of cosmetics circulate in beauty shops contain parabens.

Parabens can penetrate26 seconds your skin interfere with ease and alter the hormone function like Coal Tar dyes. These can mimic estrogen, the primary female sex hormone causing adverse defects and additionally it can cause human breast cancers.

Bottom line, what we need to consider here is the awareness. Whenever you go shopping to choose your lips stick, your make up creams and powders just be concerned with what you buy; it’s not the shape of the bottle with a glittering flash of light that can decide that this product is good for your health, it’s just the ingredients and their quality. At Pretty in Pink we stand by our products. So if you are looking for make-up that doesn’t have any of these toxic ingredients …. Check out the products we carry from Canadian company Fitglow Beauty, where you will NEVER see any of these ingredients in any of their products.

Day 2 of Spa-Mas – Shauna’s Favourite Picks

I can’t live without my Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant!

Pretty in Pink Spa Halloween Party

strawberry_rhubarb_dermafoliantI can’t live without my Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant! I start each day by adding a shake of the gentle daily-use scrub to an Éminence cleanser. It leaves my skin feeling luscious and prepped for maximum results from my morning skincare products, and especially smooth for an even all-day makeup application.

I wouldn’t hesitate to add the Éminence Citrus Lip Balm to anyone’s stocking as a perfect pout primer in the morning and as a treatment at bedtime. I would also add in glo-minerals suede lip crayon in demure – the perfect winter neutral that is matte but also moisturizing! Then layer overtop the Glo-Minerals Cream Glaze lip crayon in Heirloom for subtle shine.

firmskinacaimasque_5in_hrIf the stocking still has room, I would definitely toss in my favourite moisturizer of all time – the Éminence Firm Skin Acai Moisturizer and Masque. This leaves my skin feeling so nourished all year. In the Summer, I emulsify with Éminence Stone Crop Mist for a soothing light finish. And in our harsh Canadian Winter, I add a drop of Éminence Rosehip Triple C + E Firming Oil for deeper hydration.

As a Co-owner of a Chiropractic and Natural Health Clinic, I think very seriously about how I treat my body, what I put into my body, and as an extension of that, I also take very seriously what I put on it, too!  I love these products because their ‘pure’ values are so aligned with my health goals. It is simply the natural choice for radically healthy beauty.

When I shop I like to invest in quality over quantity – so I really like that Sonia has selected products that are beautifully sourced, but also results driven. You don’t need a lot, when you find what’s right for you.

When I started using customized products from Pretty in Pink, I was so excited when my thoughtful beauty choices got noticed, and people were starting to comment on my new ‘glow’.
